This tendency to inadvertently split up the group has as much to do with level design as it does cooperation. It's the feeling of being abandoned, which was actually an occurrence all too common in Resident Evil: Outbreak. Not the sort that comes from having only five rounds to dispatch fifteen zombies, but rather the primal fear that manifests if, for example, you lose sight of your mom at the Walmart. Outbreak's greatest strength, which often worked in tandem with its greatest weakness, was its ability to instill the feeling of desperation, isolation and hopelessness.
